Research governance-the challenge

Collette Clifford, PhD, MSc, RGN, DipN, DANS, RNT, ILTM

School of Health Sciences, University of Birmingham

This paper explores some aspects of managing research in healthcare practice today. The work is based largely on government guidelines in England in which a research governance framework has been developed and is now being used to monitor many aspects of research activity in the NHS. Following a brief overview of the evolution of the research governance framework, some aspects of the strategy are outlined and considered. The challenge to nurses is to ensure that research work is developed in accordance with these guidelines, which lay specific expectations on people and organisations working in health-care research
